Genre

UP YOUR GENRE...
Picking your genre is crucial to everything about music production. Once you have a genre, you have a target audience, you have an image, you have your style. We have chosen the 'indie/pop' genre as we feel we know it very well, and already have an artist in mind. Two of our group are are keen fans of this genre already, and two aren't. We feel this is good, because we have the best of both worlds. They can take an objective view, look from the outside in to improve our final product. The video itself will hopefully incorporate a multitude of different ideas, both following the general conventions of the genre, and some more mainstream ideals.

There are many different conventions of video's in this genre. They are usually either performance or narrative based, or in many cases, a hybrid of both. The common settings include streets, abbandoned buildings, concerts, basically normal, real life places. You won't for example find many examples of 'indie/pop' video's set in a hollywood mansion, with fast cars and half naked girls and a swimming pool. The way the band dresses is also a key part of connecting with the genre. All the band members are individual, and so all have their own style. Most indie/pop bands will be wearing skinny jeans etc...

Narrative of the actual video depends mainly on the title and meaning of the song. If the song is based around the theme of love, the video will more often than not include a narrative showing a couple, doing couple like things. Some indie/pop videos are more comedy based, the likes of Arctic Monkeys made some really good comedy influenced videos, whereby the video itself didn't really link to the song.

Feedback 25.11.09

Well done lads. This is a good start. Try to give examples to support your points as you are rather brief in your discussion of brands and band logos etc! Perhaps research a band's brand identity and part of tis the logo etc to illustrate what you mean. You all need to contribute equally to the research and planning and i know two of you have been doing audience research so ensure you upload an eg of a questionnaire and collate and evaluate all your findings etc. Post all your progress including any minutes of meetings with the artist/band to show what you're doing. Use the checklist to guide your research. All research needs to be complete by next tuesday so you can start planning in lesson time.

Target Audience

Who is our Target Audience?

The genre for our music video is indie/pop. Therefore, the natural target audience for our video are fans of these kinds of music, we are aiming particularly at older teenagers. According to the 'Phoenix Project' the kinds of people who will be into our music video are 'Savants' (For whom everything in life seems to be tied up with music, who represent 9% of the 15-39 age group in 2003) and 'Enthusiasts' (for whom music is a key part of life but is balanced by other interests. They represent 16% of the 15-39 age group in 2003) We hope to show our video on such social network sites as 'facebook' and 'myspace' as these are places most fans of the genre would be likely to look for new music.

Media trip to Bradford National Film & Tv Museum trip

On this trip, we attended a lecture by Paul Morricone in which he divulged various trade secrets and techniques undertaken in the production in music video. I think we learned a lot from his presentation, we can definatly take inspiration to help make our video.
He told us about the importance of the various roles undertaken by the production staff, the director, Director of Photography, camera men and runners. And how to create an effective video, all of the above roles must stick to their jobs to ensure the filming goes smoothly.
He also told us about the importance of syncing the music to the actual footage, in the lecture, he mentioned how he played the track whilst the band is miming along.

First Post; "Here we go"

Group; We are a group of A2 media students, from various and diverse musical backgrounds, who are intending to create a music video for the band "Black Kids", a signed band, who have given us permission to use their song of our project. The overall genre would be a mix Indie/Pop/Rock.

Due to the different musical backgrounds in the group, we believe that this will aid our video, making it unique and different, taking elements from each specific genre's codes and conventions.
Currently, the track has yet to be completed but we are hopeful that it will be finalised during the research process.
