CD covers convention

This is the kind of album cover we think we'd like to produce. The use of bright, shocking colour, coupled with bright images really fits the codes and conventions of the genre we are aiming at.  As you'll see from our album and magazine art work, we have tried to include many of these generic touches to make our product authentic. The final 2 questions of our audience testing questionnaire ask for feedback on how authentic the ancillary texts were. Results of this will be posted soon.

Music Video Ideas

Whilst discussing ideas for our music video we came across the idea of showing the band playing guitar hero instruments instead of the real instruments as a spoof. The idea was thought up of whilst looking at music videos when we came across a video of a band playing with toy guitars and guitar hero equipment.

Other ideas for the music video involve showing a party (maybe a birthday party) with cardboard cut outs, A guy singing into a camera on his own. The video is meant to look like it's homemade as part of the fun aspect to try and capture sporadically what is happening. For the location we are thinking of acquiring a local youth venue in Clitheroe, so we are going to contact the owner to see if we can use it.

Below is a video we took inspiration for the guitar hero idea...

Feedback 7.12.09

Outline your concept for the video and comment on how you will interpret (or not) the lyrics. What types of video are you producing? I need to see evidence of the planning now and you also need to ensure that you get filming this week and before Xmas so we can advise you on what to work on over the break.See me to discuss.

The Lyrics!

The Black Kids

My girl's been a real whore
Spending her time with Theodore
Now Teddy he's my best friend but
With friends like these
Who needs enemies?
My mother she told me
You're being silly
Talking, talking crazy
Don't tell me what my problem is
Just tell me what
She's doing at his
Apartment at midnight
I didn't get an invite
Tonight on my birthdy
That ain't half right
My best boy Teddy
That Skeezer How Could He?
Goddammit girl, just love me already

Can't you love, love, love me already
Love, love, love me already, baby
Won't you love, love, love me already
Love, love, love me already, baby

My father he told me
Biting and begging
That hurts your knees
You can't treat women like hotels
Why should she love you?
She knows you so well
Now I'm at a payphone
Humming so slow
To a busy tone
Now I knock on Ted's door
Keeping time with my heart beat
(He knocks on Ted's door
Keeping time with his heart beat)
Now I knock on Ted's door
Keeping time with my heart beat
The whore lets me in
And it looks (looks) like (like) a (a) party

Surprise, surprise it's your party, baby
I know you hate secrets but try not to hate me
Teddy and I, we kept it all on the sly
So baby don't cry
And please don't you try
So love me already
Love me already
So baby don't cry
And please don't you try
So baby don't cry
And please don't you try

So love, love, love me already
Love, love, love me already, baby
Love, love, love me already
Love, love, love me already, baby
Won't you love, love, love me already
Love, love, love me already, baby
Can't you love, love, love me already
Love, love, love me already, baby
Ready baby, ready baby, ready baby

The Single have landed!

We Have a Song!!!
We now have permission from the manager of Black Kids to use their songs. After I sent many email to different bands and their managers I got a reply from Black Kids letting us know we can use their music. We have decided to use the song "Love Me Already" as the lyrics make it easier to set a narrative to as it is quite an interesting song about cheating and love and what not.

Right, lets get to work

Hassan AKA Ahmed.

In addition, songs taken from this particular genre are usually about similar topics. This is usually because they are appealing to teenagers (14 +) to young adults. Typical narratives for lyrics are usually, for example, about break ups, love, "partying" or anger towards someone, usually with an upbeat feel.

Genre

UP YOUR GENRE...
Picking your genre is crucial to everything about music production. Once you have a genre, you have a target audience, you have an image, you have your style. We have chosen the 'indie/pop' genre as we feel we know it very well, and already have an artist in mind. Two of our group are are keen fans of this genre already, and two aren't. We feel this is good, because we have the best of both worlds. They can take an objective view, look from the outside in to improve our final product. The video itself will hopefully incorporate a multitude of different ideas, both following the general conventions of the genre, and some more mainstream ideals.

There are many different conventions of video's in this genre. They are usually either performance or narrative based, or in many cases, a hybrid of both. The common settings include streets, abbandoned buildings, concerts, basically normal, real life places. You won't for example find many examples of 'indie/pop' video's set in a hollywood mansion, with fast cars and half naked girls and a swimming pool. The way the band dresses is also a key part of connecting with the genre. All the band members are individual, and so all have their own style. Most indie/pop bands will be wearing skinny jeans etc...

Narrative of the actual video depends mainly on the title and meaning of the song. If the song is based around the theme of love, the video will more often than not include a narrative showing a couple, doing couple like things. Some indie/pop videos are more comedy based, the likes of Arctic Monkeys made some really good comedy influenced videos, whereby the video itself didn't really link to the song.

Feedback 25.11.09

Well done lads. This is a good start. Try to give examples to support your points as you are rather brief in your discussion of brands and band logos etc! Perhaps research a band's brand identity and part of tis the logo etc to illustrate what you mean. You all need to contribute equally to the research and planning and i know two of you have been doing audience research so ensure you upload an eg of a questionnaire and collate and evaluate all your findings etc. Post all your progress including any minutes of meetings with the artist/band to show what you're doing. Use the checklist to guide your research. All research needs to be complete by next tuesday so you can start planning in lesson time.

Target Audience

Who is our Target Audience?

The genre for our music video is indie/pop. Therefore, the natural target audience for our video are fans of these kinds of music, we are aiming particularly at older teenagers. According to the 'Phoenix Project' the kinds of people who will be into our music video are 'Savants' (For whom everything in life seems to be tied up with music, who represent 9% of the 15-39 age group in 2003) and 'Enthusiasts' (for whom music is a key part of life but is balanced by other interests. They represent 16% of the 15-39 age group in 2003) We hope to show our video on such social network sites as 'facebook' and 'myspace' as these are places most fans of the genre would be likely to look for new music.

Media trip to Bradford National Film & Tv Museum trip

On this trip, we attended a lecture by Paul Morricone in which he divulged various trade secrets and techniques undertaken in the production in music video. I think we learned a lot from his presentation, we can definatly take inspiration to help make our video.
He told us about the importance of the various roles undertaken by the production staff, the director, Director of Photography, camera men and runners. And how to create an effective video, all of the above roles must stick to their jobs to ensure the filming goes smoothly.
He also told us about the importance of syncing the music to the actual footage, in the lecture, he mentioned how he played the track whilst the band is miming along.

First Post; "Here we go"

Group; We are a group of A2 media students, from various and diverse musical backgrounds, who are intending to create a music video for the band "Black Kids", a signed band, who have given us permission to use their song of our project. The overall genre would be a mix Indie/Pop/Rock.

Due to the different musical backgrounds in the group, we believe that this will aid our video, making it unique and different, taking elements from each specific genre's codes and conventions.
Currently, the track has yet to be completed but we are hopeful that it will be finalised during the research process.

Michael.
